About Teamformance®

Teamformance® is the nexus of team formation and optimum performance, that is, achievement of the latter begins with the former. It's a little like one of the characteristics of chaos theory systems — sensitivity to initial conditions — without consideration of which all you'll wind up with is the chaos and no performance

The ability of a team to accomplish its mission, that is, the right job at the right time, on time, has a great deal more to do with its membership than with the technical aspects of the task. If this were not so, then all of the world's previously unsolvable problems would still be unsolved. (The quantitative aspects of the problems didn't change, people did, specifically to those who worked on them and how they went about it.)

People, and the power of their collective performance are the key. Organizations that value, depend on, and honor people are usually at the forefront of exploring and employing even more innovative ways of helping their people achieve consistently outstanding performance. The people-enriched organizations become even more so.

In any organization - and particularly larger ones with many departments, specialties, and divisions of labor - it is quite often the overall structure and operating environment that provides the framework for success or the bulwarks of failure. This condition applies equally for any type of team-based activity, and is particularly critical for the sustained, continuous innovation of an organization's marketable products, services, and processes.

If by this point you've already thought "Yeech, another team building thingamajig," then it is probably safe to assume that your previous experiences with this subject have not been very positive. That is, the results you were expecting — or at least hoping for — didn't materialize.

We don't know your exposure, but we'll bet that you either have a pretty good idea what didn't work, or — and here's the real puzzler — you still don't understand why the effort failed. What did go wrong?

Let us suggest to you that the failed team activity you're recalling was possibly flawed right from the start . . . and went downhill from there. You didn't see it, and perhaps still don't.

You've hired the brightest, and perhaps even "the best" based on their track records or, for the entry-level folks, an absolutely raging, flag-waving potential. But will they "work" (read: produce required results) for you? And will they do it together, effectively, efficiently, synergistically? Do you understand Your Team Environment?

Through many years of both industrial management experience and as consultants to management in many aspects of organizational performance, the principals of Customer Manufacturing Group have witnessed a host of failed team-based projects and activities. From this experience we've compiled or own list of real world Team Failure Mechanisms.

In far too many organizations, the nearly exclusive focus of a team's work is on the work, with only passing consideration given to how the team's people will work, and this usually after the project has been engaged. The result is often Dysfunctional Teams.
